East-West Tie Transmission Line

230kV HVAC Double Circuit

Valard was selected by NextBridge Infrastructure to construct the East-West Tie Line Project in Northwest Ontario. The project scope included providing project management, material management, permitting, construction and the installation of approximately 450 kilometers of double-circuit 230-kilovolt transmission line connecting Hydro One’s Wawa Transformer Station, Marathon Transformer Station, and Lakehead Transformer Station in Thunder Bay. In the end, 1,228 towers were erected, 3,563 km of conductors were installed, 2,588 tower foundations were needed, and the project involved considerable involvement of 39 First Nation communities in the region.

Highlights
  • The project overcame numerous challenges during construction, such as a global pandemic and a historic forest fire activity in the region.
  • There was considerable involvement of 39 First Nation communities in the region.
  • We worked closely with Supercom Industries, a 100% Aboriginal-owned joint venture by the six First Nations proximate to the East-West Tie transmission line, to hire qualifying candidates from the First Nation communities.
